Born Mary Emmeline Butterworth. Married Lindo Ferguson in 1884. In 1913 she was the first woman to stand for the Otago Hospital Board. During WWI she was a founding member of the Red Cross committee and long involved with the Order of St John, being made Dame of Grace in 1936. Lady Ferguson was the first president of the Otago Women's Club, and remained so until her death.
