Christchurch born black and white illustrator and cartoonist who migrated to the United Kingdom in 1950. Work published in New Zealand in The Press Junior, Radio Record, Radio Sound, Listener, Southern Cross newspaper, NZ Sporting Life and Referee. In the United Kingdom work published in The Daily Mail, The Daily Herald, The Evening News (London). Illustrated children's books published by D.C. Thomson, Dundee. Savage, "Has" Catly, and goal-kicker Morrie Doyle, and in other sports boxer Cyril Hurne, American wrestler Dick Raines, and an unnamed female tennis player. Other portraits are of Alex Pratt (manager of Hutt Speedways Ltd), George Welch (secretary of the Wellington Indoor Bowling Association), Mic Zamba (president of the Wellington Softball Association) and boxing trainer Archie Lechie. A number of plain diagrams illustrate boxing and wrestling technique. The original collage of caricatures of McNamara's Southern Cross Collegues used in their 1949 Christmas card and another of two men playing rugby are included. Description: A collection of caricatures and drawings, mostly depicting New Zealand sportsmen who flourished in the 1940s and 1950s. Includes rugby All Blacks Billy Wallace and Stan Dean, a player whose surname is Drake and another unnamed. The speedway champions depicted are Harold Fairhurst, Percy Coleman and Rich Tunbridge. Cyclist and speedway manager Gerry Mathieson is also included. An elaborate illustration 'A Night at the Opera' depicts a Wellington performance of Puccini's Madame Butterfly and features singers Leo Piccioli, Aldo, Ferracuti, Mercedes Fortunati and Maria Huder, as well as the stage manager Bruno Nofri.
