Screw steamer of 977 grt, built by J Lawrie, Glasgow in September 1863, for the Panama Co. Property of the Intercolonial Royal Mail Service Packet Co. Totally wrecked at Chasland's Mistake, south of Nugget Point on 4 December 1876. See "New Zealand shipwrecks" (p 176), by C W N Ingram.

Description: Views of New Zealand collected by Invercargill firm Erskine & Whitmore. Scenes taken by various photographers including Hart, Campbell & Co., and Coxhead & Le Sueur. Several views show Queenstown under floods in 1878; others of the Queenstown-Lakes Region, Waitati, Gore and Dunedin in the South Island. In the North Island, one shows a large picnic party travelling in three horse-drawn coaches, stopped at Ngauranga; many show a range of steam locomotives including J Class, K Class, F43, E22, H Class and A Class, in the Upper Hutt area, the Wairarapa, and on the Rimutaka line. Several at the end of the album show the effects of a major slip which blocked the mouth of the Summit Tunnel at the top of the Rimutaka Incline. Description: Photographs taken in the 1870s, covering a wide range of places, photographers mostly unidentified, and most images with no captions. The first group were taken in an around the Mediterranean, including Gibraltar, but particularly focussing on the Suez Canal. The sequence includes a copy of a montage produced by Hippolyte Arnoux, showing a map of the route of the canal, surrounded by photographs of canal designer Ferdinand de Lesseps and various sites along the route. Other images in this sequence were probably taken by Arnoux who was working in Egypt during this period. The next group of images travel via India (?), to Australia. Views of Melbourne include Government House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Houses of Parliament, the Scots' Church (in Collins Street), the Post Office, the Town Hall, and the Public Library. Following these is a panorama of Sydney, and views of Tasmania. The New Zealand scenes start with a panorama of Auckland, the Mount Eden residence of G.B. (?, pencilled name undeciphered), and the Auckland Domain). Images further south include Ohinemutu; the Pink and White Terraces; Napier; the Manawatu Gorge; Wellington (with the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel visible in the foreground); Nelson; the wreck of the ship Otago, at Chasland's Mistake; and a number of views in the Dunedin area. Description: Album chiefly containing views of the Nelson Region, including ships in the harbour, Boulder Bank, a hotel in Moutere, a partially built steamship being transported to sea, and a Thanksgiving service by the Bishop of Nelson for safe arrival. Other areas covered include two images of Wellington, one of Sale (Victoria, Australia), several of Switzerland and of Odense in Denmark (taken when the photographer travelled back to Denmark in 1873).
