Pateena (Ship : 1883- )

Passenger and cargo vessel of 1212 grt. Bought from the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company by the Union Steam Ship Company in 1891 for use on the inter-island ferry service. Laid up in 1920 and broken up in 1924.

Description: Family photographs relating to the McCurdie family. Many are groups of friends and family, some of whom are identified with both Christian and surnames. These include wedding photographs of Marjorie Whitton who married J.W. Nicolls on March 31, 1921 at Oamaru, with Betty and Mary Whitton as bridesmaids. Several views of homes include Woodcroft (the home of Dr John Kinder), Werneth (a house at Atawhai, Nelson), The Moorings (the home of W. & Lucy Churchward at Springlands, Blenheim), and Stonycroft (home of Mr & Mrs Free, at Masterton). One view is of snow in Christchurch city in July 1918, and one shows decorations in the interior of Dunedin Hospital for the visit of the Prince of Wales in May 1920. Description: Photograph album relating to New Zealand Golf Championships, 1911 and 1912, in Heretaunga and Nelson. Some photographs are inscribed "Zak" [Joseph Zachariah] but otherwise photographers are unidentified. Photographs of New Zealand Championship in October 1911 at Heretaunga include group portraits, photographs taken on the links during the competition (including spectators), and the surrounds (river, golf house). Portraits of competitors include Miss L Brandon (New Zealand Champion 1911), Mrs G Williams (winner "Mellsop" Cip 1911), Mrs Orbell, Miss Wray, Mrs Cllins, Miss Vida Collins, and Agnes Isobel Pearce. Also includes some group photographs. Governor-General John Dickson-Poynder is photographed during the competition and presenting the trophy to Miss L Brandon. Photographs of the New Zealand Championship of 1912 in Nelson are also included. They show shipboard scenes of travelling to the competition on board the SS 'Pateena', photographs of Vida Collins and Agnes Pearce playing, relaxing, and releasing a carrier pigeon. Description: Views of and from the Long Lookout Homestead owned by Charles Hunter Brown, and adjacent areas around Nelson City. These are followed by scenes of a 10 h.p. "one lunger" motor car on a six day tour from Nelson to Christchurch, and a cutting from the New Zealand Freelance decribing the trip. The car was driven by Willam Graham Vining, with Lucy Malanta Hunter Brown, Mrs W Sutton, and Miss B Humphries as passengers. Probably linked with Charles Hunter Brown albums at PA1-o-238 to PA1-o-241, in which the captions are all in the same hand-writing as those in this album.
