Description: Explains the use of her stage name. Describes how her mother came from a dancing family in Manchester and arrived in New Zealand in the 1890s. Describes dancing, doing pantomime from the age of eight and touring with other dancing children and nannies from about 1920. Mentions shows in which she performed. Recalls going to Sydney at the age of twelve, doing modelling at Art School, learning office work and doing dance training with a Russian dancer. Describes auditioning for Anna Pavlova, being given the chance to become a trainee dancer with her and being prevented by her mother. Discusses returning to Auckland, starting a dance school and beginning to work for Moodabe Theatres and at the Civic. Describes recruiting a dance team for the theatre manager of the Civic, Lawrence Quinn. Talks about their half hour programme of variety, dance and cabaret and dancers Freda Stark, Patricia Over, Thelma Creaner, Da Katipa, Joyce Somerville, Peggy David, Lolita Sullivan and Gay Vercoe. Describes doing the choreography and making costumes. Mentions also working at the Ammunition Company with Freda Stark. Describes the increasing need for entertainment as the war went on. Discusses some of their dances including Freda Stark's gold paint dance. Mentions going into a baby wear business at the end of the war. Description: Draft, annotated, paper entitled 'Dance Costume in Island Polynesia' and 32 slides intended for a conference, 'Under Capricorn: is Art a European Idea?' The conference was held in Wellington 4-6 March 1994. Most slides are numbered but there are numbers missing from the sequence, which runs from number 2 to number 37. It appears that the slides may have been taken from another larger sequence of slides in order to illustrate the lecture, as one of them is labelled 'SPAF 1972' [South Pacific Arts Festival] and another is labelled 'fig. 17'. Title transcribed from item. Title applied to item by Jennifer Shennan prior to transfer to Library. Quantity: 1 folder(s). 24 colour original transparency/ies. 8 b&w original transparency/ies.
