Bromhead, Peter, 1933- :"Better to be pissed than drunk ..." [2004]

Date: 2004

From: Various cartoonists :[Cartoons in response to complaints submitted to the Advertising Standards Authority. 1999-2007]

By: Hubbard, James, 1949-

Reference: A-466-015

Description: Shows two men sitting together drinking. One opines to the other that being 'pissed' is better than being drunk. Refers to a television advertisement made in 2004 by the Land Transport Safety Authority, where a group of 'rural Kiwi blokes' are sitting drinking together, and makes use of the vernacular term 'pissed', meaning drunk Refers to the American term 'pissed' (meaning very annoyed), the New Zealand equivalent of the expression 'pissed off' (as opposed to being 'pissed', or drunk). Read in a New Zealand context, the statement makes no sense, though in an American context it does. Refers to the fact that annoyed viewers made complaints about the advertisement to the Advertising Standards Authority The Board's deliberation determined that the language for the advertisement had been responsibly researched, the conclusion being that it was an accurate reflection of the vernacular used by its target audience (rural males between 23 and 40). The complaint was not upheld Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Bromhead [printed signature] Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Coloured photolithograph, 205 x 150 mm (approx)

Description: A three-panel cartoon in which a man first walks past a news sign announcing 'NZTA targeting "sensible stoners"' then past one stating 'Only "safe legal highs" approved for sale'. In the final panel he thinks 'I wonder how long we've had a Ministy of Oxymorons?' Refers to the seemingly conflicting intentions from the government, who will require that all legal highs be deemed illegal until tested and labelled as 'safe' and whose New Zealand Transport Authority has just launched a campaign targeting so-called 'sensible stoners', that is, those who drive under the influence of cannabis.
