The Atkinsons were married soon after their arrival in New Zealand in 1853, and settled in Nelson in 1868. A lawyer, Arthur was a man of many interests including astronomy, natural history (he was known as "Spider" Atkinson), Maori language and culture. Charles Fell, Arthur's business partner married the Atkinson's daughter Edie in 1881. Along with his enthusiasm for photography (the Alexander Turnbull Library holds two large albums of his photographs), he painted watercolours, and had an interest in music.
