Description: Album of photographs, some prints, some contacts from 35mm film, taken by Professor John Salmon in Wellington. Most of the images describe his use of different camera lenses and filters. Many of the scenes are taken from Professor Salmon's window at Victoria University of Wellington, showing different moods in different weather patterns. They include early morning, afternoon, and night views, northerly wind and southerly wind cloud patterns, including a southerly storm. He also has a large number of images of Wellington Harbour and wharves, again taken in different lights, showing ships, reflections and buildings. Other sequences show views of the Hutt Valley, Silverstream, and Glenmore Street in Wellington, many taken on misty early mornings. Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways circa 1930 to 1931 by unidentified photographers. Some subjects have images dotted throughout the album, including the arrival in New Zealand of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in March 1930; the arrival in 1931 of Sir Francis Chichester after his crossing of the Tasman in his bi-plane; various activities at the Hillside Railway Workshops, including a group portrait of staff; and various images relating to Railways ticket offices, advertisements for railway tours and excursions, photographs of tickets, and an advertisement for house removals by train. A series of views show athletic sports including running races, hurdles, cycle racing, and long-jump. There are scenes showing the international sportsman Dr Otto Peltzer winning the 880 yards, handicap race at Wellington, on 8th February 1930. Team sports are shown in two views of a women's hockey team playing on the field below Victoria University College, and a series on rugby football, including views of the 5th test between Britain and New Zealand at Athletic Park in 1930. Railways head office picnic, including races by men, women and children (p 35-36), and a huge crowd at Paekakariki Beach, picnicking and swimming (p 70). Official occasions include scenes of the Empire and Australian Farmers' Tour, a view of the cortege at Sir Joseph Ward's funeral outside Parliament Buildings, the opening of Massey Memorial, and various views of unidentified railway officials in personal and group portraits, including one of the members of the New Zealand Railway Commission. Description: Album of publicity photographs, taken by unidentified photographers, chiefly in 1935 At the beginning of the album there are a large number of photographs of the buildings, and crowds at a race meeting at the Trentham Racecourse. (See article by O.N. Gillespie in New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue, 12, March 1, 1935). The album has many publicity photographs, designs for railway advertisements and posters, all showing the advantages of travel by rail. The advertisements include methods for travel savings: `Buy travel stamps. Travel savings N.Z.R. 1/-, 2/-, 2/6, 5/-, from railway stations & booking offices'; also `Start saving to-day for your trip away...'. Other posters advertise cheaper travel in the off-season, including summer holidays at the Hermitage, with low combined rail and motor fares" as well as advertising full season trips to tourist destinations. There is one photograph of a programme [?] for "New Zealand Authors' Week, 1936. Souvenir". Near the start of the album there is a large group of views at Flock House, agricultural college at Bulls. They show pig farming, dairy cows, sheep, lucerne for pasture and vegetable growing (See New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue 12, March 1, 1935); and in one of these Lord Bledisloe is bending down examining pasture (See New Zealand Railways magazine, Vol. 9, Issue 11, February 1, 1935) There are a few individual and group portraits, but only one or two are identified. Description: Mounted images with annotations from the first part of Albert Armitage Salmon's 1936-1937 trip to New Zealand. Images of South Island scenery and tramping, particularly along the Milford Track, comprise the bulk of the photographs, but prints also include some images of Salmon's departure from Sydney. Photographs taken by Salmon. - The images follow the route of Salmon and his companions' travels, and begin in Sydney Habour (Port Jackson) with images of the Habour Bridge, Luna Park illuminated at night, and the ship, 'Strathnaver', in the water. Also contains a photograph of Salmon's travel companions, Mary Hansen, Eric Keehn, Irene Booth, and Reg Booth aboard the deck of the 'S.S. Awatea' on their journey across the Tasman Sea. - The New Zealand images of the North Island begin in Auckland, and show a view of the Harbour and the University grounds with tulips in bloom. The images also include a view from inside a road tunnel in the King Country, rock formations above the Awakino River, the coastline and rock formations at New Plymouth, views of Mount Egmont (Taranaki), and tramping scenes in the fairy forest of Mount Egmont. The photographs also include views of Wanganui and the Wanganui River, the Wellington Harbour towards Miramar peninsula from the summit of Mount Victoria, and the hoisting of their car 'Marie', a Ford V8, onto the deck of the 'Rangitira' for the ferry ride from Wellington to Port Lyttelton, Christchurch. - The South Island photographs begin in Christchurch and include images of the War Memorial Bridge over the Avon River, and Hagley Park. The bulk of the images show scenery in Fiordland, including views of Lake Te Anau, the Eglinton Valley, the Hollyford River, Milford Sound, the swinging bridge and other scenes along the Milford Track, including images of snow, ice, waterfalls, glaciers, rivers, plant life, and mountain peaks. The box also contains a photograph of Mary Hansen wearing ankle boots with small heels as she crosses the Roaring Meg stream from Jervois Glacier. Renouf, Philip, fl 1968-2014: Photographic slides of Wahine disaster

Description: Comprises photographic colour slides relating to the sinking and salvage work on the Interislander ferry TEV 'Wahine'. Taken by Phil Renouf after 10 April 1968, and before the completion of salvage work in September 1973. The Union Steam Ship Company passenger ferry 'Wahine' sailed from Lyttelton to Wellington on the night of 9 April 1968. In the early morning of 10 April, it struck Barrett's Reef in Wellington Harbour during a storm and sank with the loss of 51 lives. A second storm on 8 May 1969 broke the hull into three pieces. The ship was demolished on site by salvors. Salvage operations were completed in September 1973.
