Recalls her mother's death when she was eight, the children not being taken to her funeral and a series of housekeepers. Talks about her stepmother Grace Harris and relief that family kept together. Refers to the Depression and having to help at home for two years instead of going to technical college. Talks about getting a job as a tailor's apprentice when she was 15 and being required to contribute board and food to the family. Reflects on her awareness that war was coming, having a radio at home and the start of broadcasting from the BBC. Discusses her brothers Max and Rex joining up, Japan coming into the war and being afraid for Rex in the Merchant Navy. Refers to how life changed with the young men in uniform and away, shortages, queues and ration books, and the possibility of invasion. Comments on social life in Wellington, and the presence of American servicemen. Reflects on the anxiety of people with relatives overseas and recalls reading casualty lists. Recalls that newspapers were full of optimism and victories but failures were not accurately conveyed. Mentions learning about the Manners St incident and the mutiny by Japanese prisoners at Featherston from "chatter". Explains going nursing to become an army nurse as well as to escape from her "intolerabe" home. Refers to her struggle with the training because of her lack of education, and the hierarchical and disciplined atmosphere. Recalls nursing returned servicemen in Wellington Hospital, their injuries and their stoicism. Mentions the men did not show much evidence of psychological difficulty at this stage, possibly because they may not have realised how their disabilities would affect their futures. Discusses the atmosphere and camaraderie in the nurses home. Mentions nurses who got married or pregnant had to leave nursing, and recalls sepsis from back street abortions and police in the wards. Talks about working after the war at Queen Mary Hospital at Hanmer, which was a place of respite and rest for people who were getting over trauma and tragedy. Mentions the nurses were encouraged to socialise with the patients and meeting her husband Bill, a survivor of an Arctic convoy ship that sank. Discusses her marriage to Bill and the ongoing effects of the war on him and on the family. Refers to having to work again to support the family.
