Description: Photographer unidentified. Scrapbook originally owned by Muriel Smith, a noted pianist. Contains a wide range of photographs and ephemera relating to her and her parents, Mr and Mrs George Smith of Gisborne, dated circa 1895 to circa 1930s. Photographs include studio and amateur portraits of unidentified men, women, girls and groups; a group standing outside a single storey house with verandah; and several of groups outside a large two storied house, presumably their home at 'Berwen', Grey Street, Gisborne. Ephemera items include postage stamps and stickers; Masterton Girls' Collegiate School certificate for Miss Black, 1895; Christmas cards; dance and garden party invitations; dinner menus; a toast list; riddles [from Christmas crackers?]; an advertisement for Gisborne City Hall recital of Len Barnes and Muriel Smith, 1927; and a postcard for United Treat Movement 1913-14 for State School Children of Poverty Bay District organised by Mr and Mrs George Smith. Newspaper clippings include a photograph of students outside Kaiti Girls' College, Gisborne; items about a toast made by George Smith; Muriel Smith returning from two months study in Wellington, 1929; Mrs G Smith having a literary afternoon, having a bridge and tea dance, and a Christmas Eve party; a musical recital with Miss M Smith and Mr L Barnes; and a review of a series of international concerts organised by Muriel Smith and Mr Carrington Wellby, 1930. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Quantity: 1 scrapbook containing 48 b&w original photographs, 5 photo-mechanical prints, and 66 items of ephemera which includes 17 newspaper cuttings. Physical Description: Album with blue cover and green leaves, 27.5 cm x 22.0 cm, titled 'Post cards' with a picture of dog and leaves embossed on cover. Provenance: Donated by the Gisborne Branch of NZ Society of Genealogists, 2014, after purchasing it at an auction in Auckland.

Description: Born in 1900 at parents home in Roxburgh East. Second youngest of 12 children. Father a farmer. Attended local school until 15. Music played an important part in family life, and the family was known for its musical evenings. Miss Gordon began playing piano aged 10, studied locally until aged 16 when she moved to Dunedin to continued with studies. Gained ATCL, LTCL, and FTCL. Miss Gordon taught piano in Roxburgh for many years. She also formed a dance band Gordon's Orchestra which played at functions and weekly dances in Roxburgh. The band also toured Central Otago. She also played for the silent movies for a number of years and was a theatre usher. Miss Gordon was involved in many organisations and was organist for the local Presbyterian church for more than 50 years. Though her main interest was music she also made hats and painted. Miss Gordon was awarded QSM in 1979. She died in August 1993. Description: Dorothy Davies recalls commencing piano lessons at the age of 4 with Ms Gerse (Gurse?) and at Wanganui Girls College with Mrs Redwood, who had studied in Leipzig with Leonard Borrick. Outlines her career - on leaving college became private piano teacher, took LAB (Licentiate of the Associated Board) and entered Sydney Conservatorium in 1924. Mentions Frank Hutchins, Alfred Hill and Lawrence Godfrey Smith, a pupil of Theresa Carenia?. Returned to New Zealand in 1928 and worked in Broadcasting in Christchurch. Recalls 1928 earthquake during broadcast when she continued playing as the piano rolled away. In 1931 went to study at the Royal College of Music, London for three years. Mentions lessons with Schnabel which she describes with reference to concept of mental practice. On completion of classes continued in Tremezzo and played for liede classes of Theresa Behr, (Schnabel's wife), for two years. Returned to New Zealand 1939 and worked as a pianist for 2YA. Refers to programme organiser, John Reed and John Schroder. Discusses friendship with Douglas Lilburn. Started classes at Porirua, and refers to some students - Keith Kinsella, Michael Corban, Bruce Mason, Gillian Watson, Keith Field, Joan Havill, Elaine Sharman and Bryan Sayer. Mentions Sister M Winifrede and recalls classes in liede held in the St Cecelia singing room at St Mary's College Hill Street. Recalls being awarded MBE for service to music in 1976.
