Description: Contains a diary kept by Henry Jull on his travels around Japan in 1917, entitled `A Trip to the East'. Henry Jull describes the trip to Japan aboard the SS `Moeraki' with troops from the 23rd and 24th New Zealand Mounteds. Following a stopover in Australia, Henry Jull transfers to the SS `Tango Maru', where he also visits the Phillipines, Hong Kong and China before arriving in Japan. Once in Japan he visits gardens, palaces and the cities of Yokohama, Kyoto, Hakone, Nagoya, Nara, Nikko and Kobe. On his return voyage to New Zealand he visits Honolulu, San Francisco and Fiji. The mascot of Support Company, a dog called Smokey, is also pictured as is a puppy called Scratchy. Watt's recreational activities are also covered, including a trip to the Shimonoseki Races, sports competitions (athletics), a performance by the pipe band of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, a Kendo demonstration, and handling snakes. Also contains touristic photographs of local scenes and people, architecture, and historic sites such as temples and shrines. Further images are: a portrait of baby Errol Jon Welch [Watt's nephew?] in his pram; photographs from Suva, Fiji, including an informal portrait of Pat Patton, military policeman at gates, and an unidentified woman; an informal portrait of Norma, Beryl, and Norma Watt in Marrickville, Sydney; and a campsite in a paddock on the edge of the bush at Orere NZ (December 1934). Henry Jull describes the trip to Japan aboard the SS `Moeraki' with troops from the 23rd and 24th New Zealand Mounteds. Following a stopover in Australia, Henry Jull transfers to the SS `Tango Maru', where he also visits the Phillipines, Hong Kong and China before arriving in Japan. Description: "Here Kuniyoshi vividly presents the typical scene on the New Year Day of the Edo period, boldly drawing in the center a big kite with a picture of Bodhidarma and some children playing with it. Around the kite there stand out three pairs of mother and child, one in the middle on their way to take the first bath in the year, another on the right to play battledore-and-shuttlecock and still another on the left watching kites flying. Seen fa[r]ther away, among others, are a merchant drawing a cart loaded with the first cargo and the symbolic Mt Fuji looming beyond the cloud. The people of the Edo period in the mid-19th century particularly loved colorful ukiyo-e prints and pictures of valiant and vigorous warriors. Also, a notebook giving details of functions held at the Scotts' residence in Tokyo, and a two page account by Ruth Scott of her life, particularly referring to her interest in ikebana. Also, further papers of loose correspondence, recipes, and some material relating to her husband, John Stuart Scott, added later. Two cassettes, part one and part two, containing interview with Ruth Scott by Arthur Feslier about ikebana for Take Five radio programme. Description: Tsuneyo Page was born in Manchuria in 1932 where her father was a Japanese Government official during the occupation of Manchuria. Describes the Chinese communist takeover after World War II when her father was executed and her family suffered many hardships. These led to the death of a brother and her mother and the hospitalisation of the rest of the family on their return to Japan in 1949. Describes living with her uncle before working as a waitress in a neighbouring town where she met her husband, a New Zealand K Force soldier. Discusses her family's attitude to marrying a foreigner and the army's attitude. Recalls arriving in New Zealand and going to Feilding, local attitudes and difficulties socialising. Talks about her jobs, children, feelings about Japan and changing New Zealand attitudes.
