Description: Medal obverse shows a profile portrait head of Queen Victoria facing left, by Benjamin Wyon. The reverse shows a scene of shipwreck survivors attracting the attention of a lifeboat. This medal was awarded to George Edmonds for his part in saving life from the wreck of the "Admella" (wrecked on a voyage from Adelaide to Melbourne off Cape Northumberland, 6 August 1859). Description: Card quotes the words of M L Haskins: "I said the man who stood at the gate of the years: "Give me light that I may tread safely into the unknown". And he replied: "Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than the known way". Graphics show a rising sun and an inset of a street light at top left. The poem of which this is an extract, was published as "God knows" in 1908. Princess Elizabeth showed it to her father in 1939, and he used it is his Christmas message. It had a widespread inspirational effect. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s) on postcard. It is the usual acronym for the city of Christchurch; here however it stands for 'catastrophe', 'havoc', 'care', 'help'. Context - on 22 February 2011 a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck in Christchurch, which has probably killed more than 200 people (at this point the number is still not known) and caused very severe damage. The courage, generosity and 'can do' attitude of the people of Christchurch has been wonderful but the whole country and is contributing to the effort to get Christchurch back on its feet as well as aid from overseas.
