Garland, Phil, 1942-2017

Folksinger and folklorist. Originally a singer with the Christchurch rock 'n' roll band the Playboys, Garland turned to folk music in the early 1960s, specialising in New Zealand-related material. He founded the Christchurch Folk Music Club and the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Folklore Society, under whose auspices he undertook several field collecting trips to Otago, Canterbury, and the West Coast, 1968-1970. He recorded many LPs and published several books. Lived in Australia between 1987 and 1996, before returning to New Zealand. Awarded QSM for services to folk music in 2014.

Description: Photographs relating to the New Zealand Folklore Society, and the career of folksinger and folklorist Phil Garland. Most of the images were taken between 1967 and 1970 by Phil Garland and unidentified photographers. Comprises: - Two photograph albums (and many corresponding negatives) relating to fieldwork on the West Coast (1967-1970) and in Otago (1969-1970). Images include historical buildings and mining equipment relating to the 1860s goldrushes, portraits of Garland's informants and of Garland himself. Some negatives also feature images of a musical group including Garland. - Loose prints, including of folk musicians performing at the Christchurch Folk Centre in 1967.
