Description: Map of the Wanganui River, on six sides of 4 sheets, five of which are numbered, of a canoe and camping cruise from Whakahoro to Atene. The sixth and final map of the route has the subheading 'Locality of base camp and training ground'. Each map includes some navigational instructions and rapids are numbered and named in a key as are distances of one mile and five miles adjusted between major landmarks. Historical sites, numerous pa sites, huts, settlements, caves, peaks, springs, mineral and freshwater sources, landings, many mission stations and stations are named. Several inset sketches cover the difficult stretches of the river, mainly rapids, and show the routes the canoes should take. Each map includes mileages at the beginning and end of each featured section while arrows indicate North and Downstream. Extensive notes give sources of historical detail and include general information. Quantity: 6 map(s) both sides of 2 sheets and one side of another two sheets. Description: Views of a trip along the Whanganui River with views of Paranui kainga (listed as Parinui in the album), showing groups of whare, groups of Maori, various activities in the kainga, canoes on the river, and many scenes of waterfalls along the river. These include Taraipokiore (or Tarei-po-Kiore), Otuitu Falls, Ohura Falls, Kakahi Falls. The "Ladder scene", copy of Denton photograph, and other views of the Whanganui River and Ohura River. There is a gap in the album, followed by a separate sequence on Napier. These images include panoramic views of Napier from various locations, church buildings (including exterior and interior views of St John's Cathedral), hotel buildings and other public buildings and memorial statues. Description: Draft of a map of the Rangitikei River in five sections, designed to be folded when printed. The sections are: 1, rapids 1 to 28; 2, rapids 24 to 90; 3, rapids 86 to 158; 4, rapids 155 to 204; 5, rapids 201 to Kakariki. The start of the north-to-south trip is near the suspension bridge just north of Utiku, and the end at the road and rail bridges near Kakariki. Sections 1, 2 and 3 have enlargements of difficult sections of the river. Natural features marked on the map include cliffs with approximate heights, rapids, greywacke shingle beds, tributary streams, and a stretch in section 4 where the river channel varies daily. Bridges are marked and also shown in silhouette looking downstream. Prominent tree groups, houses and bush are indicated, as well as steel cables, power pylons and major roads. Data are given for a trip in January 1953: distance 51 miles, falling 700 ft; 16 hours on the water; initial speed 4 mph; final speed 2 1/2 mph. Description: Shows a view of the passengers and polesmen in a canoe. The men with the poles are labelled Jowett and Deighton. Closer to the front are "The ghoul" (Rora, the wife of the canoe's captain Ewehi) and "Lady and dog". The "lady" is wearing a feather cloak and a hat, and beyond her are seen the backs of two men wearing jackets and hats. Description: Unpublished volume 'Once upon the Wanganui' compiled by Christina Mitchell in 2018 about a canoe trip that her father Boris Haden and five friends, Ron Mayhill, Tom Campbell, Maureen Chirm, Bruce Nutsford, and John Spencer, took on the Whanganui River in 1953. The volume is based on her father's account, along with Mitchell's research which included conversations with Ron Mayhill, and Bruce Nutsford's widow Sylvia. It includes copies of photographs taken by members of the group in 1953 and taken by Mitchell in 2018, and a sketch map of the river by J D "Jim" Mason which was used by the group. Includes comments written on the map of a river journey, identifying the camping locations over six nights, with comments on tide and rapid levels. Includes location of 'Omako Beach where Beard's party obtained gold colours'. Includes two photocopies of an Evening Post article dated Saturday March 9, 1889, regarding an article entitled 'A trip up the Wanganui River', which says the party included Frank Wills, AW Brown, WG Tustin, FW Haybittle, B Loughrey (City Engineer), and was accompanied by three Maori guides: Paneta, Taki Taki and Katera.
