Postlethwaite, William, -1908

Born in Broughton-Furness, Cumberland, where he became high sheriff. Came to NZ 1872; settled at Opawa and Riccarton. Bought the Raukapuka estate from Alfred Cox 1875; held pastoral land in Peel Forest, South Canterbury. Member of Parliament for Geraldine 1881-1884. Chairman of the Geraldine Road Board, a founding member of the Geraldine County Council 1877 and a member of the Timaru Harbour Board; promoted the construction of the breakwater. Left New Zealand in 1891 for California where he grew fruit. He then returned to England and re-purchased the family estate in Cumberland. (Scholefield, DNZB, v2).
