Description: Photographs of Hawai'i, Samoa and New Zealand, taken by various photographers circa 1880s and 1890s, including John Richard Morris, John Davis, F Finch and Josiah Martin. Inserted in an envelope is a hand-written list of photos, but these seem to bear no relationship to the album. The list includes places in New Zealand (none of which are in this album), Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, New Caledonia and Fiji (again none of which are shown in this album). The photographs of Hawai'i include Iolani Palace in Honolulu, and Queen Lili'uokalani; Samoan images show children, a waterfall at Falefa near Apia, and a group of dancers in traditional dress. Images of New Zealand include landscapes, Maori children, a hongi with two women, and a collage taken by Josiah Martin of images of Maori chiefs, waka and meeting houses at Parihaka and Ohinemutu. Description: Photographs of Samoa taken between 1905 and 1936, some taken by Samoan photographer Alfred James Tattersall, many by unidentified photographers. One photograph is not related to the rest, showing two young women flautists from Highcliff School, Dunedin, winners of a Dunedin competition in 1918 (P 90) The earliest ones, taken in 1905, show the damage caused by a volcanic eruption, and show lava pouring into the sea. The rest of the images are related to Donald Alexander John Rutherford, headmaster at Ifi Ifi School (Leififi School) from 1919, becoming Superintendent of Schools from 1923 to 1936. There are many scenes which include his family, with his wife and four children (including Alexander Mathieson Rutherford). Many of the scenes show school activities, including the ceremonies surrounding the opening of the new school at Avele; the schools at Malifa, at Ifi Ifi, Poutasi, Aleipata and other districts; sports teams; school parades, including boy scouts linked with the schools; and groups of teachers, both European and Samoan. General views of Samoa include the construction of a fale, the interior of a fale; fishing; cocoa beans and their harvesting and drying; copra industry, with Solomon Island workers; and sowing cotton seed. Several images show the celebrations for George V's birthday; school breakup feasts; and the farewell flotilla of canoes when the Rutherford family left Samoa in 1936. Social activities of the Europeans in Samoa include tennis, large groups of bowlers, and garden parties at Vailima, the Governor's residence. The album documents official occasions associated with the Vice-Regal visit; ceremonies, feast, dances and orhter performances, and military inspections, with the participants on both sides wearing impressive costumes. Description: Album of Samoan photographs taken mainly at Tutuila Island and Ta'u, American Samoa, but also includes images from Upolo, Samoa, taken and compiled by Eddy Williams, a pharmacist who served with the US Navy 1914-1935. Williams was stationed at the American naval station in Pago Pago Harbour on Tutuila from June to September 1924. Images show Tutuila and Ta'u island and its people, including landscapes, landmarks, coastal views and buildings. Images of Samoan people wearing traditional garments and adornments, and United States Navy personnel in uniform. Portraiture ranges from formal group portraits to social snapshots, with others showing activities such as the manual processing of coconuts. Images of children and young adults posing for the camera. Also includes images of tatooing and the tools used. Other images show ships and canoes. Many of the photographs include no caption information. Description: Album of photographs of American Samoa and Samoa, taken and compiled by Eddy Williams, a pharmacist who served with the United States Navy 1914-1935. Williams was stationed at the American naval station in Pago Pago Harbour on Tutuila from June to September 1924. The broad range of images in this collection provide a detailed documentation of Tutuila Island and other Samoan islands in the early 1920s, however the complete lack of captions in this album has resulted in some of the subject matter remaining unidentified. Images show Tutuila naval station, the islands, European and indigenous people. The collection includes photographic documentation of the following: - The built environment - Fale, government administrative buildings, military barracks, school buildings, and dwellings. - Landscapes - including coastal views, mountains, seascapes and natural features, such as the Alofaaga Blowhole. - Ships and canoes - including the United States naval cargo and passenger vessel USAT 'Buford', which visited the South Seas in 1924. Also traditional Samoan canoes used for fishing and racing (Fautasi racing). - Samoan people - both in traditional dress, wearing customary adornments and ceremonial attire, and in uniform for military drill and parades. - European civilians and naval personnel in both formal and informal settings, including images of visiting officials. - Samoan children - both individuals and groups, including large group of pupils of The Public School Manu'a. - Medical and pharmacy - including interior views of naval pharmacy and medical facilities, including medical and nursing staff in uniform. - From Samoa are images of the tomb of Robert Louis Stevenson. - United States naval personnel include members of the crew of the USS 'Ontario'. - Newsclipping from an illustrated journal shows a photographic portrait of a young Samoan female subject with the caption 'Underneath the South Sea moon, famed by song writers, reign beaded beauties like this. Description: Album created by Sir Thomas Berry Cusack Smith. Scenes in England include two large houses "Gaynes Park", and "High Beech". Scenes of life in Samoa when Cusack Smith was British Consul there, some of which were taken by photographer Thomas Andrew; portraits of family members; people associated with the consulate, including William Blacklock (American Vice Consul-General), Herr Biermann (German consul). Other portraits include Agnes Bagot, Mary Hamilton, Mata'afa, A. Warren, Teo, and Arthur Harford. There are several photographs of Winifred Cusack-Smith, and of her grave after she died of a fever in 1894. Description: Photographs taken in the district around Loughton (Essex, England), including wedding scenes of the marriage of Thomas Berry Cusack Smith and Winifred (nee Maitland) in 1896, and later, scenes with their young daughter Maia Wilhemina Cusack Smith. The latter part of the album includes images of life and events in colonial Samoa during the time T B Cusack Smith was posted there as British consul, with views of the consulate, general views of Samoa, and portraits of several Samoan dignitaries. Several scenes show various performers at the British consulate in a farce by John Maddison Morton. As well, one photograph shows the unveiling of a statue of Queen Victoria at the Legislative Council Buildings in Pietermaritzburg (South Africa) in July 1890. At the end of the album there are a number of images of Cambridge and Dresden, circa 1889. Many of the photographs were taken by Thomas Berry Cusack Smith, but some are identified as being taken by professional photographer C C Cutchey (Loughton), and by friends in Samoa, H W Bowker, and Colonel W L Samuells. Description: Compiled by S Percy Smith. Album includes 42 pages of photographs of Samoan scenery, towns, buildings, and portraits. Photographers represented include Burton Brothers, Thomas Andrew, J Davis, and A & W. As well as Samoa, this album includes photographs of men and one woman in the Solomon Islands; their ceremonial dress, weapons, and a house with an ornately woven patterned wall, and thatched roof. The last two photographs show men with weapons, wearing masks. Several photographs show images relating to Robert Louis Stevenson. One (on page 32) shows "R L Stevenson & party". Stevenson and his wife with European and Samoan men and women are seen standing at the back of a large group on the steps of the verandah at Vailima. The verandah is draped with fern leaves. The group seated in front on the stairs includes Samoan men, mostly holding axes, and a group of sailors holding musical instruments.
