Description: Comprise Meade's journals on the Esk and Curacao, botanical, biological, meteorological and and scientific observations, sandal wood, and the journal of a tour from Auckland to Taranaki 1849-1850 by Governor Grey Source of title - Transcribed Brenchley first visited the Pacific in 1850 with the French traveller, Jules Remy, during his American tour. He later visited New Zealand in 1864 with Lt Herbert Meade RN, and involved himself in Maori affairs. From Sydney he visited Pacific islands in the Curacoa in 1865 and the Esk in 1866. Description: Travel journal kept by a Mr Pontifex, apparently a lawyer in Brisbane. Records his travels to the Australian outback, New Zealand, Europe and Britain. Describes travel from Brisbane to St George Qld (1886); Christchurch to Blenheim (Oct-Nov 1889), involving a tour of sheep stations on horseback with a friend, recording names of stations and owners, notes on scenery and state of roads; Christchurch to Hanmer via Kaikoura (Dec 1889) on foot or by coach, with similar descriptions; North Island Jan-Feb 1890, with visits to Maori villages, including Parihaka, where he met Te Whiti. Described in some detail. Other passages record trips to Europe. At the end of the book is a resume of his extensive travels. Description: She describes the voyage out on the Eclipse, 1858-1859, and her first impressions of New Plymouth and its inhabitants. Her comments on colonial society are detailed and perceptive Maria came to New Zealand in 1859 on the Eclipse as governess to the family of the Rev H H Brown, a clergyman at Omata, New Plymouth. In 1860 she was evacuated to nelson, and shortly afterwards dismissed from the Brown's service. Unable to pay her fare back to England, she reluctantly worked as governess to Lulu Eyes, the daughter of one of the wealthiest men in the province. Maria stayed with the Eyes family at Wairau for one year, She returned to England, having decided that the shortage of artistic talent together with the burden of domestic work was not to her liking Quantity: 1 volume(s). Description: Comprises 11 letters from Charles H Turner and Frank C Turner to their mother in England while they were sailing to New Zealand, travelling round New Zealand followed by a visit to Australia. Three of the letters are from Charles and eight are from Frank. They were written on board ship, the `Kent' and the `Tarama', and while they were travelling in New Zealand and Australia. Both sons describe life on board ship, the people they were travelling with, ports visited, activities on board ship and describe in some detail the various places they visited in New Zealand (Papakura, where their brother had a farm, Waikato, Lyttelton, Wellington, Bluff, Dunedin, Nelson, Auckland and Taranaki) and Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart Town). They relate mainly to the 1850s and describe life in Wanganui and Taranaki during this decade, including farming, economic activitity, travelling between New Plymouth and Wanganui and relations between the settlers and Maori. Also included is a description of a trip made by Morgan in 1853 droving sheep from Kai-Iwi to Taranaki published in the `Hawera star', 10 Aug 1935 and a brief talk about John and William Morgan given by Robert Morgan. John Morgan was born in Dorset and emigrated to New Zealand in 1849 aboard the `Berkshire'. After a brief period in Taranaki he settled in Wanganui.
