Description: A cadastral map of rural and suburban sections open for sale and selection of the area from Lake Horowhenua to Koputuroa Road, and bounded by the Kawiu and Makomako Roads. This cadastral map has numbered sections, some coloured, and include acreages and owners' names handwritten in some sections. The Wellington - Manawatu Railway is marked as are a school and a waterworks reserve. Streets and the Koputuroa Stream are named. The base maps are of sections in the Blocks I, II & VI, Waiopehu Survey District. Sections marked with red are large settlements open for sale or selection and are referred to in a key. Schedule of the suburban sections and rural lands in this district include the section number, acreage, value and rent. Terms and conditions of sale or selection of the Levin village settlement include the statement 'Drawn by F.J. Hales'. Includes a written description of rural land and the application date of 18 March 1889 at the Crown Lands Office, Wellington and includes J.W.A. Marchant's name. Description: Most of the images relate to a survey team (or teams) operating in the hill country west of the main road between Raetihi and National Park, centred in the area around Ruatiti. The two names in the album for the area are the Ruatiti Block which includes the Ruatiti Stream and the Manganuioteao River, and the Riariaki Block and trig immediatly to the north. There are images of team members, camp life (ie storing food, cutting hair, living quarters, rod fishing, and swimming), groups out on the job (ie cutting trees, making survey pegs, moving through the bush with packs and equipment, on horse back, returning from the hunt, packing in supplies, making observations, and constructing the Maungaroa trig station), and views of the native forest, and rivers. Interspersed among these photographs are others which include social occasions such as farewelling a survey team member, a motoring trip associated with a large house called "Pihautea," an amateur instrumental group, a cricket game in Nelson, and a group in Albert park Auckland. There is a farmyard with woman, hens and horses, a buggie fording the Mangaturuturu Stream, views of Island Bay, Mount and Lake Tarawera, the Makatote bridge, and the Ohakune Railway Station Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Survey camps, rivers, waterfalls, family, and friends

Description: Many of the photographs were taken when H E Girdlestone was working as one of a survey team in the Taihape area. Views of the survey camps variously descibed as near Taihape, on the Hautapu River, as Oroua Bridge, Mataroa Township, Raketapauma, and Rangiwaea Block. He has included scenic views of native forest from some of these and other locations. Most notably he has taken photographs of many waterfalls on the rivers and streams in the area. Many of these are on the Turakina river. One called Rereaupiko Waterfall is formed where the Mangoiwa Stream falls into the Hautapu River. There are also views of the Whanganui River and one of a load of passengers on the "Wairere," a Whanganui River boat. Other scenic views have been taken in the Trentham area, Upper Hutt. These include a stream and native forest, the Hutt River, and cattle in pasture. Other locations around the Hutt Valley and Wellington are a bridge over a stream in the Wainuiomata water reserve, Young's Gardens Karori Wellington, and Views of the South coast looking towards and from Sinclair Head. There are local volunteer military units who participated in a marching competition on the 5th of October 1901. Those named are the "Highlanders", "Kelburns," "College Old Boys," "Civil Service," and "Post and Telegraph." Finally there are many images of family, friends and collegues. These include a group of adults and children at a house in Featherston and shows people playing croquet, members of a survey team in a tent, Girdlestone and a fellow worker engaged in chopping down a large forest tree, groups of young women and men in their sunday best, a group of men in fancy dress playing instruments, the children and teacher of Mataroa School photographed outside what is probably the school room in March 1901, and people in kayaks and canoes on the River Avon Christchurch. Description: Photographs of surveyors on the job in the eastern Wairarapa, the Rangatikei District, and the Wanganui River. Most of these photographs date from 1905 to 1907 and include Hugh Bogle and Hubert Girdlestone. There are three photographs relating to sports. One is an unidentified rugby team with Hubert Girdlestone in the front row. Another is of a women's hockey match in Auckland in 1907, and the third shows hurdlers in action during the Basin Reserve sports of March 1909.
