On 14 February 2013, Pistorius fired four shots through a locked bathroom door at his house in Pretoria, killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Despite claiming he had mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder, Pistorius was formally charged with murder on 15 February. Pistorius had competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
