Samoan advisory council. Established by Wilhelm Heinrich Solf, the German Governor of Samoa, in 1905. Members of the Fono were chosen by the Governor. The Fono a Faipule was abolished in 1957 and replaced by an elected Legislative Assembly (Maoto Fono) as part of the process towards Samoan independance. NOTE: "Fono" is a general word for (among other meanings) meetings. It is often followed by a qualifying term describing what sort of meeting.
