Description: Lantern slides of gardens and related subjects taken ca 1930s-1950s. Five slides are labelled as being taken by William Williams in Christchurch during the 1930s, but otherwise photographers are unidentified. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and subject. The images include: - Views of various gardens, flower beds, and trees. Also associated buildings and garden features including steps, ornamental borders, ponds, large pools, streams, bridges, pathways, the rock garden at Windlesham Moor, and a band rotunda. - Four images of Abbotsford Park in Gloucestershire, England. - Six images of gardens in Christchurch taken by William Williams between 1933 and 1937 (with labels giving the addresses). Another image shows the greenhouse at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. - Aerial views of two extensive formal gardens. One image shows gardens around a castle with moat, possibly in Holland. - Delphinium trial garden bed with sign, identifying it as held by "R H S" [Royal Horticultural Society?] and the British Delphinium Society. - Eleven images appear to be from commercial series. Nine feature drawings relating to garden design; the others show water lilies and a circular floral 'clock'. - Another series show plant portraits in garden settings, including at Windsor Great Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. These images are numbered and may be from a commercial set. - Also contains an image of an unidentified man [gardener?] carrying baskets on a pole. Description: Kauri seed laid on kauri wood, female and male kauri cones, and Tane Mahuta (giant kauri tree in the Waipoua Kauri Forest). A view of the Waimate North Mission Station Church; three views of a ginkgo biloba tree at the home of John Gilkison at Cambridge; three images taken at the home of Merta Alford (Harriet Mercy Alford) at Taotaoroa showing Sir Michael and Lady Inagh Parsons, visiting New Zealand. The last five images show scenes at a waterlily garden. Marked as being at Waitoa by Rhoda McWhannell, but possibly the Waihi Waterlily Gardens. Description: Coloured photographs inserted under plastic; probably taken by Rhoda McWhannell. Most of the images show plants, many of them flowering, including natives such as cabbage trees, karaka berries, kowhai flowers, manuka, and kauri gum on a young kauri. Other plants include red currants, water lilies, wild chicory, lasiandra (or tibouchina), gourds, sedum, scarlet nerines, ginkgo trees, dogwood, fuchsias, passionfruit, wych elms and maple trees. One photograph shows the Penn family (Michael and Helen Peen, with their children James and Sally) taken at Hamilton in 1977; and several show Merta Alford (Harriet Mercy Alford), at her home in Cambridge, NZ. Description: Album of photographs relating to family and friends, travel, farming (including horticultural nurseries), and gardens, chiefly taken by Rhoda McWhannell. The front page of the album contains 26 postage stamps from RSA (Republic of South Africa). One group shows individual children of different cultures issued for Christmas 1977; one group shows different varieties of South African plants inclduing proteas and leucodendrons; one image is of the university at Stellenbosch; and two are of historical events at Ulundi and Isandlwana. The first part of the album relates to Rhoda McWhannell's brother and his family. Several are of Bill McCurdie's daughter Kirsten and her children in England, including views of Christ's Hospital School at Lincoln; others are of Bill and Inga McCurdie, with Kirsten and her children Simon and Alex in South Africa. Photographs of `Rozel', the McWhannell farm and tree nursery are the main topic of the rest of the album. These range in time from the 1950s to 1980. Description: Transparency slides of Australia selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet shows Australian plants and insects; a view of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney; the ship Monowai leaving Sydney Harbour; views of the Taronga Park Zoo including giraffes, crocodiles, kangaroos, black swans and a koala; the Sydney observatory; further views of Sydney Harbour including Darling Harbour and the Sydney Heads, Manly from the sea, and the Harbour Bridge. The last two images show the Cotter Reservoir and the Cotter Dam near Canberra. The slides are not filed in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of Australian images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England.
