Description: Shows a half-length portrait of a young woman with hair centrally parted and tied back. She wears European blouse and striped skirt, and wears a cross on a pendant around her neck. The third edition of Dr Prichard's "Natural history of man" (London, 1848) has this image as Plate XXVI (opposite page 352), and it is entitled "Woman of the Mariana Islands". The artist is unknown, but the work may be derived from Arago or Pellion who are known to have visited the Mariana Islands prior to this date.
