Description: Booklet promoting the Rotorua Baths and evaluating their waters: the acid sulphur baths including the Priest and the Postmaster; and the alkaline sulphur waters including the Rachel. Also discusses the mud baths, the Radium Bath, the Duchess Bath and the Blue Bath; the Aix and Vichy systems of douche massage; the dry massage and electrical treatment including Dr Schnee's electric multipolar bath, the Bergonie apparatus, electric-light bath, Greville hot-air baths and diathermy. Another section discusses the drinking of water - Rachel water and water brought from the springs at Te Aroha. There is a page on the Sanatorium, a list of fees for all the health treatments, and a timetable of bathing hours. The front cover shows a photograph of the Bath House, Rotorua. Description: Album of scenic photographs, chiefly taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, with views of the North Island and South Island. North Island scenes include a number of tourist views of Maori, showing carved meeting houses; a group performing a haka; two women demonstrating the hongi; a young woman wearing a feather cloak, hei tiki and huia feathers, and holding a mere; a group of young boys in a haka pose; a woman smoking a pipe; a group of children bathing in a hot pool at Ohinemutu; and Mr. Nelson's carved house at Whakarewarewa. Other North Island scenes show Mount Taranaki, the Auckland wharves, Lake Waikaremoana, and a man fishing at the Ohau Channel, Rotorua. South Island views cover Lakes Wakatipu, Manapouri and Te Anau; the Tasman Glacier; peaks in the Southern Alps; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; a team of four horses with a laden Cobb & Co coach on a ferry, crossing the Mangahua [i.e. Inangahua] River, the Lyell River Bridge and Hawks Crag, all in the Buller Gorge. The cover wrap shows colour illustrations by A H Messenger of trampers on the Tongariro Crossing, a traditionally dressed Maori girl fishing guide beside a lake, and an open-topped motor car driving beside a lake. Inside is text, with photographs of Rotorua, Guide Rangi at the Model Pah, a Maori welcome at Whakarewarewa, steaming pools, the Waimangu Geyser, Maori cooking food in a hot pool, a Maori hangi, the Bath Building, and a bird's-eye map of the thermal region. Description: Photograph album containing outdoor views taken circa 1900-1905 by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in the Northland Region of New Zealand. Photographers unidentified but many possibly taken by Thomas Pringle who was employed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in 1901. Compiler of album unidentified. Some images have captions. Images mainly show outdoor views, including landscapes, buildings, beaches, industry (including logging and gum digging), and harbours. Some show people. Whangarei and Whangaroa Harbour feature. Despite the title of the album: 'Maori life and scenery', Maori people do not predominantly feature, except in a loose print taken by Thomas Pringle in circa 1905, showing three girls playing 'whai' string game, and some other prints showing Maori families and individuals. Other: All prints have an inscription "New Zealand Government and Tourist Department Protected 7.1.03", however 7 January is not the date the photographs were taken. It is likely to be the date the was registered/patented. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Inscriptions: Backing board recto - On spine: "ZZ/P575/Photographs of Maori Life and Scenery" and "General Assembly New Zealand library" insignia. This insignia is also on the front of the album. Relationship complexity: This album relates to PA1-o-1884 and PA1-o-1885 which came to the library at the same time and belongs to the same series of albums which were from the Parliamentary Library.
