Description: Album of newspaper & magazine cuttings, maps, and black & white photographs, with the title "Outer New Zealand". Includes information on various islands, including Auckland Islands, Kermadecs, Cook Islands, Niue, Rarotonga, Western Samoa, Makogai Island Leper Station, and areas of the Antarctic. On page 6, there are 2 photographs of Cook Islanders wearing traditional clothing, one group from Mangaia, and one group from Aitutaki. There are sections giving detailed information and illustrations showing various agricultural activities, including the growing of bananas, copra, breadfruit, rubber, taro, kava plants, cacao, coffee and cotton; and on page 21 are 3 images showing the construction of a fale (Samoan dwelling). One section (pages 24-25) has information and images of Robert Louis Stevenson, his wife, his house "Vailima" and his tomb. There are several pages of coloured illustrations of different breeds of Samoan fish (p 46-50). Page 27 shows a group of Faipule (members of the Samoan Native Council) who visited Wellington in May 1925.

Description: Captain Bligh standing in a small rowboat at the water's edge on the right, with two sailors steadying the boat. He watches as a group of Tahitians lift a young breadfruit tree in a small wooden tub towards the boat, with further saplings lined up to be transferred. A fruiting breadfruit grows on the left among banana palms and other tropical plants. A central figure, a Tahitian chief in a long white robe and draped hat, directs procedings. The rigging of one of Bligh's ships, the Providence or the Assistant, is visible in the right background. The central Tahitian figure appears to be based on Sir Joshua Reynolds' portrait of Omai. Omai died in 1780, well before Bligh's visit to Tahiti for breadfruit transplanting. Description: Shows travellers resting on a rock at the right foreground, beside a dam with two pipes in it which allow water from the reservoir behind to fall into the pool in the left foreground. The scene is set amongst luxuriant jungle growth. Plate 58 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist. Chavannes engraved the French version, but the Italian version has been engraved by Piozzo. From the text in Domeny de Rienzi's book (volume 1, page 225), it appears that Passo is in the extreme North East of the Celebes, near Tondano and Manado. Other Titles - Iles Celebes. Description: In 1908 Dr. W R B Oliver led a group including S R Oliver, W L Wallace, and T Iredale on a 10 months expedition to Sunday Island (now known as Raoul Island) in the Kermadecs. (Information from the Enclopaedia of New Zealand, Vol 2, edited by A H McLintock, 1966, page 710.) (Most/all?) of the photographs in this album were taken by Oliver, and some of the original negatives are held at the National Museum of New Zealand (Te Papa). The album includes scenes of daily life, including building thatched huts and storehouse, boat repair, preserving mutton-birds. Landscapes of different parts of Raoul Island, Denham Bay, Coral Bay, Macauley Island, Curtis island and Esperance Rock Photographs of fauna include many different types of birds, their eggs, their chicks, and as adults; also two photographs of sea turtles (one shown with King Bell, a son of Thomas Bell who lived on Raoul Island). Close-up views of plants show the type of flora found on the islands. Several photographs show members of the Bell family who farmed on Raoul Island from 1878 to 1914 Accompanying information - `Notes to help identification' by Wynne Spring-Rice, who went on an archeological expedition in 1990. The notes identify the various sites photographed by Oliver in the 1908 expedition Other - Some of the images in this album have corresponding original negatives held in Te Papa.
