Description: The Vigilant left London in Oct 1831, rounded the Cape of Good Hope and headed for Indonesia. Calls were made at Timor (Mar-Jun 1832) and Ternate (Jul-Aug). The Vigilant then sailed north to New Guinea, whaled in New Ireland waters (Sep-Dec) and continued to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand (21 Feb-23 Mar 1833). Subsequent calls were made at Tongatapu, Tonga (29 Jun-5 Jul), Tutuila, Samoa (10-12 Jul), Bay of Islands (14-30 Oct; 30 Jan-4 Feb 1834), Norfolk Island (20-21 Feb), Bay of Islands (31 Mar-30 Apr), `Eua, Tonga (30 -31 May), Vava'u, Tonga (15-22 Jun), Manu'a, Samoa (25-27 Juun, 7-11 Sep), Savai'i, Samoa (2-4 Sep), Sydney (19 Oct-24 Nov), Bay of Islands (28 Feb-18 Mar 1835). The Vigilant returned to England via Cape Horn on 2 Aug 1835.
