Description: Bound volume of offprints of Gudgeon's `Nga Tangata Maori' (a history of Maori) published in the `Monthly review' (1888-1890), with some smaller articles included at the back; heavily annotated and redrafted by Gudgeon. This was clearly Gudgeon's own working copy. The `Nga Tangata' articles include whakamomore, tohunga, matakite, longevity, war, the military system, prehistoric inhabitants, a massacre, the genealogy of Tamatea Pokaiwhenua. Also an article on Toenga Pou, the tohunga, written for Gudgeon by McDonnell, on Maori titles to land and the Native Land Courts, written by Gudgeon but under McDonnell's name, a series of articles by H Sterndale on the South Sea Islands, with a comment on the series and revision of some of the articles by Gudgeon.
