Hunter, Ashley John Barsley, 1854-1932

Auckland civil and mechanical engineer, artist, photographer, and cartoonist. With three others, founded the 'Auckland Graphic' newspaper, 1877, later the 'New Zealand Graphic, Ladies Journal and Youth Companion'. He was its cartoonist throughout the 1890s. Ashley Hunter was born in England, in 1854 and arrived, aged 17, in Wellington aboard the ship 'Halcione' in 1871. He set up as a photographer (Excelsior Studio) in Manners Street, Wellington for about 6 months. He then joined New Zealand Railways where he drew plans and was later accepted as a cadet by the Public Works Department. He moved to Auckland in 1873, initially working on the Waikato railway line, then the Bay of Plenty railway line. Stewart and Hunter, engineers, were responsible for the design and construction of the Ngaruawahia and Hamilton railway bridges in 1877 and 1880 respectively; water towers at Matamata, Tirau, Lichfield and Cambridge, Waikato (which still stands in the early 21st century); work for the Auckland Harbour Board and work at the Paparoa coal fields, Greymouth. Married Eliza Jane (Lillie) Halyday, second daughter of James Halyday, on 13 Mar 1878 at Pitt-street Wesleyan Church, Auckland (Auckland star, 21 Mar 1878, p 2). Hunter died in Auckland in 1932. Son of John Agrippa Hunter (1819-1869) and Mary Ann Ashley (1827-1889). Older brother of Stanley B. Hunter who later came in Oct 1878. Description: Book caption reads - Very much at the last minute, the New Zealand government asked for three amendments to the [Australian] Commonwealth Bill - involving legal and defence matters and seeking the right [for New Zealand] to join the Commonwealth for another seven years on the same terms as the original states. William Pember Reeves, New Zealand's Agent-General in London, annoyed Australian colonies with his reported remarks that a further referendum might be needed. The Australians had held nine referenda in the previous two years and there was no intention of holding any more, particularly as the decision had been a close run thing in New South Wales. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation. Description: New Zealand is shown as a small boy in sailor costume riding on the tail of a kangaroo bounding across the Tasman sea from New Zealand to Australia. Exhibition and book captions read - New Zealand supporters of federation [with Australia] stressed the shared British stock, language, Queen, God and trade possibilities. New Zealand would progress by 'leaps and bounds' with an assured market for cereals, fruit and some manufactured goods. South Seas isolation was another reason for embracing federation. There was uneasiness about growing German power and French intentions in the Pacific. There was also fear, however, irrational, of the 'yellow peril'. Description: Exhibition and book captions read - By the mid-1890s New Zealand's economy was picking up strongly to the discomfort of both the opposition press at home and the politicians in Victoria, who were staunch supporters of federation [with Australia].
