Description: Colour transparencies of birdlife, sailing, and local scenes taken by James (Jim) Watt in Chile during the Totorore expedition and on his travels after he left the expedition, circa Jul-Dec 1983. Set includes images of birds including oystercatchers ( "black ater", "brown and white American palliatus", "Feugian leucopodus black and white"), turkey vultures "Gallinazo", black vultures (Valdivia), a Peruvian pelican (Valparaiso), pelicans and piqueros [boobies?] in flight, and kelp geese. Local scenes show Santiago (including high rises, view from [Santa Lucia?] hill, and a street market), unidentified ruins of a [fortification?], a gun emplacement, a street scene in Valparaiso, Nuhuel Island, Andes seen from the sea, the wreck of the 'Lord Londsdale' (Punta Arenas), Valdivia corral, and Calbuco Island settlement. Description: Colour transparencies of birdlife, sea lions, sailing charts, and local scenes taken by James (Jim) Watt in Chile during the Totorore expedition, circa Jul-Dec 1983. Set features images of a colony of sea lions at the north point of Guafo Island. Images of birds include grey phalaropes, kelp geese feeding, chimango caracara, oystercatchers, and unidentified birds on rocks [pied shags?]. Also included are images of moss and other plants in the bush, three nautical maps (two charting routes from Guafo Island to Ypun and one of the Punta Arenas area), a scenic image of mountains and sunset from Quellon, and view of the Guafo Island lighthouse (faro). Description: Comprises photographic prints and negatives relating to service of James (Jim) Green on the New Zealand Navy survey vessel HMNZS 'Lachlan' circa 1948 to 1975. Also relates to crew reunions organised by Jim Green in 1974, 1984 and 1995 for the 1st and 2nd commission 1949-1955. The 1995 reunion event was cancelled. Photographs taken by unidentified photographer(s) between circa 1948 and 1990s. Images include James Green, fellow crew members and unidentified persons taken during surveying voyages by HMNZS 'Lachlan' around New Zealand and in the Pacific Islands circa 1949 to 1960s. Also includes views of HMNZS 'Lachlan' at sea, possibly taken 1960s to 1970s, and views of former crew members at reunions circa 1970s to 1990s. Many prints have probably been used for display at reunion events, and may have been collected by Green for this purpose. One set of photographic prints match the images in proof sheets and film negatives. Some of these prints are enlargements. Negative images show crew members in support vessels off unidentified coast, small numbers of crew members posing on deck and on wharf and beside bench, solo portraits of crew members in uniform wearing lei, a single seabird in tussock, solo portraits of James (Jim) Green, a wedding circa late 1950s, and scenes at reunion functions. Negatives at 1/4-124846-F, and 1/4-124865-F to 1/4-124871-F; 1/2-237107-F to 1/2-237121-F, and 35mm-100629 to 35mm-100718. Source of title - title supplied by Library In October 1949 the Royal New Zealand Navy obtained its first hydrographic survey vessel, the HMNZS 'Lachlan'. In 1950 the newly established Hydrographic Office of the Navy recommenced the re-survey of New Zealand's coastline begun in 1937 using HMNZS 'Lachlan'. It served as survey and Antarctic supply vessel until February 1975.
