Includes photographs of New Zealand fighter and bomber pilots serving with the Royal Air Force, and several British Official photographs relating to New Zealand fighter pilot with the RAF, James Allen Ward, who was awarded the Victoria Cross. Most individuals identified in the album are listed above. Description: Photograph album relating to Henry Beresford Maunsell's service during World War I, with the NZ Army 9th (Wellington East Coast) Mounted Rifles Regiment in Egypt. Many of the military personnel are identified, a few with later dates added noting when some of the men photographed in the album were killed in action. The first part of the album shows soldiers leaving on board HMNZ troopship 'Orari' 14 October 1914, the trip through Hobart, Colombo, Aden, Port Said until disembarkation in Alexandria December 1914. Many scenes show the shipboard stabling for horses used by Mounted Rifle troops; others show various ships they passed on the way. The latter part shows various military scenes in Egypt, including The New Zealand Corps camp near Cairo; swimming horses crossing the Nile; Red Cross Vauxhall ambulance; groups of soldiers riding camels; horse lines; and a line of horses at drinking troughs. Eccles, Martin Ashton :Photographs of Palestine and Gallipoli, 1914-1918

Description: Martin Eccles of the Wellington Mounted Rifles went to Gallipoli with the 2nd Expeditionary Force. After Gallipoli he became part of the ANZAC Mounted Division in Palestine. These photographs relate to this part of his war service. They are not organised in any way, but many have information written on the back. This is an individual soldier's record of events, not that of a military strategist. Many photos are of individual, or groups of soldiers, whom Eccles knew or was associated with. Others record troop movements across the countryside, and towns such as Raffa and Jaffa. There are also one or two of the British High Command in Palestine photographed in informal situations. Time off on leave and visits to Egyptian antiquities are also represented. Finally, there are a few shots of Eccles in New Zealand either before or after the war. Martin Ashton Eccles remained in Gallipoli until the final disembarkation. He was in the army in Palestine until the end of the war. He became an Anglican priest and as Canon Eccles was attatched to the Diocese of Waipa (Waikato). Quantity: 300 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: Two soldiers of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles resting in the shade of their horse in the Egyptian Desert. Photographed by an unknown photographer in May 1916. Inscriptions: Verso - top left - McKay This image was published in " The New Zealanders in Sinai and Palestine," Lieutenant-Colonel C Guy Powles, Whitcome and Tombs, 1922, p 22. Its context in the book indicates that it was taken in May 1916 after the army had crossed the Suez Canal into the Egyptian desert, but before any real fighting took place. The name "McKay" is written on the back of the original print, and this may be the Corporal Mckay who is among those acknowledged at the end of the book, particulary for lending photographs to the author. Description: Mounted Soldiers of either the New Zealand Mounted Brigade, or the ANZAC Mounted Division, riding along the embankment of the Suez Canal, Egypt. Probably photographed by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Guy Powles in 1916. The label on the original envelope from which this negative came was "Egypt. Training." This probably means that this photograph was taken in 1916 after the New Zealand Mounted Brigade had moved from Zeitoun to Serapeum on the Suez Canal in January 1916. Here training continued and the ANZAC Mounted Division was formed on the 15th of March 1916. On the 23rd of April 1916 the Division moved to Kantara as a Turkish force had attacked the Suez Canal.
