Halsey, William Frederick (US Fleet Admiral), 1882-1959

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey (USA), the son of Master William F Halsey USN. Graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1904 and spent his early service years in battleships and torpedo craft. Was awarded the Navy Cross in 1918. Served as Naval Attache in Berlin, Germany 1922-1925. Commanded in the South Pacific Oct 1942. Left the South Pacific in May 1944 and was promoted to Fleet Admiral Dec 1945. Retired from active duty Mar 1947. (Information from www.history.navy.mil).
