Description: Interview with Jean (Jeanette) Ngan (nee Wong), born in Taihape in 1933. Interviewer's summary: Talks about being one of 5 children of New Zealand Chinese parents who ran the General Store at Utiku near Taihape and were actively involved in the local community. When Jean's older brother drowned the family moved away to the Hutt Valley and established a new business in which Jean worked until she was released by her father to pursue her ambition to become a nurse. Discusses her marriage to Guy Ngan, then an architect but for the greater part of their married life a self employed artist and sculptor, the couple moving to Stokes Valley where over a period of years Guy built their home. Talks about raising 2 children there and, during her years at home with the children, doing a considerable amount of weaving, exhibiting and selling her work, and was a member of Port Nicholson Weavers. Discusses in detail domestic life, housekeeping and food in her parents' and her own home. Describes family photographs. Description: In this interview Jim Brodie talks about his late wife, Audrey Brodie who was born in Wellington and brought up in Wanganui as an orphan. Mentions her lifelong friends, Gwitha Haggie and McClymont family. Recalls that she trained as a radar operator in Levin and worked on Journal of Science and Technology at DSIR for 2 years before sitting teacher's C certificate. In 1955 she worked for the Royal Society of New Zealand Library in Zoology building at Victoria University and was Librarian at National Health Institute. Was involved with: Eastern Suburbs Spinners & Weavers; National Consultative Committee on Disarmament; Indonesia 1972-1977 with work for Lutheran Group in Jakarta with recovered lepers; UNICEF on texts in English for Indonesian schools; involvement with Quakers, working as assistant clerk, librarian, clerk Quaker Peace & Service, and as their representative on Religious Broadcasting Advisory Committee of Radio New Zealand, Education Commission, National Council of Churches and Methodist & Presbyterian Public Questions Committee. Description: Lila Eleanor Coker (nee Hunt) recalls early memories of hemming purificators for the church at the age of four years. Describes grandmother as an embroideress working vestments and linen for the Ashburton Anglican Church. Moved to Anderson's Bay, Dunedin after marriage in 1939 and recalls joining Miss Moran's evening class ca 1945-1947. Talks about the `Chapel Kneeler Project' and husband's involvement making slate frames. Refers to Shona Johnstone who was in charge of materials. Recalls being President of the Guild 1967-1968. Describes move from embroidery to pottery and later interest in spinning and weaving. Refers to Dean Hurst who formed St Paul's Cathedral Embroiderers' Guild and to the next Dean, Timothy Raphael, who thought there was too much embroidery and closed the guild.
