Date: 1889, 1893-1894, 1994, 2016

By: Watson, Ella Mary Marriott, 1873-1966?

Reference: MS-Papers-12038

Description: Collection comprises two diaries written by Ella Watson on separate journeys to England, in 1889 and 1893-1894. It also contains biographical information about Ella written by her granddaughter. One diary recounts the voyage from Lyttelton to London on board the 'Waihora', the 'Manapouri', and the 'Iberia' from 23 July - 9 September 1889. Entries document the ship's route and describe Watson's daily routines (meals, sleep patterns, health, reading), a visit to family in Melbourne, social life on board (concerts, games, conversations), and specific events including a shipboard birth, mending the doctor's trousers, meeting local people in Perim, going ashore at Port Said, and seeing Mount Sinai and Mount Etna. Specific people discussed include family (Ma, Pa, Kitty, Elsie, Fred, Effie, Win) and crew members (the captain, the "nice-looking purser", the young doctor). Poems and song lyrics are transcribed throughout the diary. Also contains a mourning card and dried flower for Miss Wright, St John's Parsonage. The second diary records Watson's activities while staying at 27 Mowbray Road, Upper Norwood, England, from 28 August 1893 - 20 October 1894. Entries describe daily routines (travel around the London area, meals, reading, social visits, church, weather) and specific events, including a drive to Hayes and Keston, singing practice, dances at the Kennaway's and Dr Proctor's, a cat show at Crystal Palace, and theatre outings. Watson also records her opinions on women smoking, missing New Zealand, Frank Watson's enagement, and her affection for Henry Marshall, whose name is often written in code. Other people discussed include her family (Mother, Elsie, Minnie, Win, Frank, Harry, cousin Kitty Munro and her fiance Dr Morris), as well as friends and acquaintances (the Andrews, Kennaway and Symons families, Mr Theobald, Sir Walter Dalrymple, William Ernest Henley, Mr Pennell). The back inside cover notes her voyage from Lyttelton to Tilbury Docks, London (May - July 1893). Poems and song lyrics are also transcribed at the back of the diary. Folder also contains biographical material about Ella Watson written by Jillian Pearson (1994) and Nell Hartley, from an interview with Ms. Pearson (2016). Title supplied by Library. Ella Mary Marriott Watson was born in 1873 in Christchurch where her father, Henry Crocker Marriott Watson, was Vicar of St. John's Church in Latimer Square. One of 11 children, Ella mentions several siblings in her diaries: Harry (born 1864), Frank (1865), Fred (1867), Minnie (1878), Effie (1882-1902) and Nellie (1885). References in both diaries to "Kitty", "Kit", and "Kitty Munro" may refer to a cousin, or to a cousin and sister both called Kitty. References to "Win" may refer to her brother Wentworth (1872), and "Elsie" is possibly her sister Alice (1876). Harry, Frank and Win were living in London by 1893 when Ella, her mother, and sisters visited. She married Henry "Harry" Marshall in Christchurch in 1899.
