Gibson, R H, 1833-1894

Letter to Sir Harry Atkinson from Te Henui, Taranaki, 1882 re scheme for insuring lives of children; wrote to John Ballance from New Plymouth in 1891 re absentee land owners. Mr Gibson was born in the year 1833, at Sidmouth, Devonshire. He studied for the medical profession at the London University where he took his B.A. degree. He was a pupil of Dr James Martineau, the distinguished Unitarian divine, and of the Rev. Dr. Morgan. Mr Gibson acted as a private tutor and lecturer in Manchester for nearly seventeen years, his favourite subjects being English History and Literature. He came to New Zealand in 1878, and for a short time was the classical master in a private school kept by Mr Ellis in Liardet-street. Owing to failing health he had to resign, and then followed the profession of private tutor. In 1892 he visited England on business matters, returning to New Zealand at the close of that year. Mr Gibson was a writer under the non de plume of "Egmont" contributing to the Taranaki Herald. He also was a large contributor to the Dunedin Evening Star, where his articles appeared under the non de plume of "Cuivis." Mr Gibson also contributed largely to the literary and scientific journals in England.
