Description: A poster advertising a play at the Opera House, Wellington. Shows an illustration of a bespectacled woman. The woman has been identified as Miss Jessie Whitelaw Newton. The Evening post for 2 July 1895 gives a notice of the production by Wellington Dramatic Students, in aid of the Wellington Benevolent Institution, of A W Pinero's "The schoolmistress". The cast included: Morris Fox, H E Nicholls, Mr Alex W Newton, H Letham, W Simm, W P Bastin, R Hall, Miss Watson, Miss Jessie Newton, Miss Mabel Hill, Miss A K Parsons, Miss Q Letham, and an orchestra conducted by MacDuff Boyd. Miss Jessie Whitelaw Newton played the part of Miss Dyott, principal of Volumnia College, and her sister Nellie (Ellen) Newton played the part of Miss Margaret Hesslerigge who is striving to be a governess. A newspaper review dated 3 July 1895 from a "morning paper" has a review of the various performances in the play (See letter from Hon. Katherine O'Regan, file S.AR.002.001.014-v01, 16 January 2006). Howard Letham was the brother of Queenie Letham who later married John Napier Newton. MacDuff Boyd married another Newton sister, Jane (Jeannie).
