Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber, chiefly between 1934 and 1947, but including copies of some of his earlier photographs. Views include trips in the North and South Islands, and views of his home and family, especially in Whiteman's Valley Road and the area around Silverstream. Also various scenes of floods (Hutt River), and storm damage. Photographs associated with roads and railways include steam locomotives, tunnels, bridges and viaducts, some under construction. Among the trip photographs are views of Ngaruawahia, including King Koroki's house (opened in 1938) and the Maori Parliament House. Description: Hamish Thomas was born in Christchurch, in 1922. Explains origins of family names and early family history of MacFarlane ancestors, who arrived in New Zealand in 1840. Backgrounds education, boarding at Christs' College and two terms at Canterbury College, now named University of Canterbury, before being called up to war in 1940. Outlines three years in the army and further time served in the navy. Talks about England at the end of World War II, his time at Cambridge University, 1946 to 1949, and his introduction to Outward Bound. Recounts his return to New Zealand in the 1950's and the need for Outward Bound. Names fellow enthusiasts Captain Warwick Dunsford and Fergus Taylor. Recalls the inaugural meeting attended by Commodore John O'Connor Ross, Group Captain Quill, Captain Wallace Rowling, Reg Hornsby and Bo Cottrell, a former All Black. Outlines initial experimental course at Mototapu Island army base and the establishment of the Outward Bound Council. Mentions election of positions of responsbility and his appointment as warden. Talks about Outward Bound warden meeting in England, the selection of the Anakiwa site in the Marlborough Sounds and setting up the first course in 1962. Describes need for physical training, bush and sea activities. Outlines the goals, philosophy and early staff of the school. Details buildings and facilities, local support, administration, visitors including Prince Charles, Lord Charles John Lyttelton Cobham and the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip, the initial lack of female students and range of activities.
