Saunders, Linden Charles Mansell, 1908-1995: New Zealand Herald reviews and articles

Date: 1940-1994, 2002

By: Saunders, Linden Charles Mansell, 1908-1995

Reference: ATL-Group-00020

Description: Scrapbooks of reviews and articles by and about L. C. M. Saunders, and indexes to the reviews. Scrapbooks are labelled with a number and the date range of the reviews inside. They contain glued in newspaper clippings of Saunders' reviews for the New Zealand Herald. Each clipping is dated and many have 'pd' (most likely meaning 'paid') annotated either on or next to them. Some pages have annotations that appear to be the dates and titles of reviews that have not been attached. Loose clippings inserted into the scrapbooks generally are articles about Saunders or about musical performances in which he was involved. A few are reviews that have not been glued into the scrapbook, or articles other than reviews written by Saunders. There are also some loose papers that are notes for reviews or lists of reviews. Loose clippings from the last two scrapbooks are reviews written by others. Photos of musicians were also inserted into some scrapbooks. A programme for a performance in 2002 was presumably inserted into a scrapbook by Saunders' wife, Helen. The reviewer is identified at the end of each review by the initials L. C. M. S. until the 1970s when the newspaper's signature convention appears to have changed, and the name appears as L. C. M. Saunders. Saunders reused a variety of bound volumes as his scrapbooks. One is a share transfer ledger from the 1920s and two are accounts ledgers, which from the remaining visible entries appear to be from Saunders' father's cordial manufacturing company in the 1930s. Others are used school roll books and a diary. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music Title supplied by Library. L. C. M. Saunders (also known as 'L. C. M. S.') was music reviewer for the 'New Zealand Herald' from 1940 to 1993. He was also Director of Music at King's College from 1936 to 1974, and in this role directed musical-theatre productions and other musical performances. Quantity: 1 Linear Metres. 12 volume(s). 3 folder(s). 8 b&w original photographic print(s). Physical Description: Printed matter, typescripts, mss, photographs. Provenance: Donor/Lender/Vendor - Donated by Mrs H. Saunders, Auckland, August 2013
