Cooper, Arthur, 1861-1935

Stipendiary magistrate, O.B.E., chairman of the War Pensions Board, and a steward of the Wellington Racing Club. Resident of Sydney Street, Wellington, at the time of his death. Born in July 1861 at Waipawa, the son of G S Cooper, Colonial under-secretary. Educated at Wellington Grammar School and Wellington College. Registrar of the Supreme Court from 1889-1914. Appointed Stipendiary magistrate in 1915. In the 1880s, he was in the front rank of footballers of Wellington, playing in representative teams 1878-1886. Often went deer-stalking with Sir Charles Skerrett. (See obituary in Evening post, 26 June 1935).
