Description: Oral history interview with siblings Maureen and Mervyn Castle, grandchildren of John Castle one the original benefactors of Wellington Zoo. Describe their grandfather in detail. Recollect his looks and character, and narrate his life in London, immigration to New Zealand and eventually becoming a well known Chemist in Riddiford Street, Newtown. Mentions other family members including their grandmother Annie, their father Mervyn Athol, their uncle Raymond Castle, and their aunts Una and Zillah Castle. Talk about their grandfather founding the Zoo with others including Rev. John Crewes, and the donation of the first animal 'King Dick' the lion. Refer to the letter from Wellington City Council granting their grandfather and the Castle family free admission to Wellington Zoo. Mervyn and Maureen talk about their first memories of Wellington Zoo and being taken there by their grandfather. Recalls an incident where an escaped monkey took refugee in their backyard in Daniell Street in the late 1950s. Mentions elephant rides and hearing the roar of the lion from their home. Recalls the changes in the Zoo during the 1980s. Discuss the necessity of Zoos for conservation purposes and the wonderful work that the Zoo keepers do. Description: Papers mainly relate to Ronald Castle and his sister, Zillah. They include Ronald's poems and correspondence; Zillah's correspondence re performing and teaching, scrapbooks relating to music, musical instruments and general topics including programmes for concerts in New Zealand and United Kingdom; papers relating to Ronald's and Zillah's radio broadcasts, featuring talks on early musical instruments and joint musical performances; notes on the collection of early musical instruments and correspondence and accounts relating to their importing into New Zealand of instruments for their collection of early musical instruments. There are also music scores of compositions by Zillah with words by Ronald, scores of works by other composers, and sound recordings of interviews and performances. Also included are microfilms of early music scores held at the British Museum.
