Description: Marjory Bell compiled this album from 1926 to 1928 when she attended Wanganui Girls' College. Most of it focuses on the pupils, some of their outside activities, and the staff. In most cases people are identified by some form of first name, or as in the case of the staff, by surnames, and several groups are identified by full names. Description: Maudie grew up in Putiki. Describes how, at the age of six months, she was healed by the Prophet Ratana. Outlines family background - grandfather, Haimona Te Utupoto, from the Tawhitinui Marae on the Whanganui River, was the last living Tohunga for Moko (traditional tattoo) in the area. He inherited a farm at Turakina. Maudie describes how her family lived off the land, gardening, eeling and fishing. Refers to the Depression (slump). Describes their six room house and the community at Putiki and the marae, Takarangi Mete Kingi, which was privately owned. Discusses the closeness of relatives with and without tribal connections and gives an example. Names elders living at the marae: Papa Takarangi, Mete Takarangi, Amokura and Peihana (the mother of Papa, Tame and Ariki). Describes her contact with the Pakeha world, and realising the differences when she went to work in Wellington at a munitions factory. Talks about the Ngati Poneke Club. Describes (before the war) the Putiki Maori broadcast from Station 2YC in Wellington with Kaiwhaiki people when she was the soloist for the opening broadcast - a song composed by Morvin Simon's uncle Ope Whanarere. Talks about her singing voice, singing action songs for the Culture Club in Putiki and Wellington and teaching songs, poi and movements in Wanganui Schools. Describes her involvement in the Catholic and Anglican Churches. She married and has one son. Describes returning to New Zealand, their marriage breakup and becoming a solo parent of three children. Describes in detail life as a single parent and her experiences as a woman on the Domestic Purposes Benefit (DPB). Reflects on societal pressure on women. Was President of the Solo Parents' Association which she describes. Reflects on her efforts to gain further education and training as a school teacher at Palmerston North. Interview focuses on her parents' life in Germany during the period of Hitler's anti-semitism; childhood in Sydney where parents emigrated in 1949 and where she received her education; growing up in a Jewish environment in Australia, and later in Palmerston North, New Zealand, where she moved after her marriage to Robert Chong in 1970. Mentions the harrassment of Jews in Palmerston North and connects it to the economic depression. Mentions the help they received from people on coming to Palmerston North, especially the staff of Palmerston North Girls' High School where she got a job as a mathematics teacher. Talks about her husband's culture, (Chinese) and discusses having a `mixed marriage'. Describes the compromises both have made so that children would share in both cultures. Describes her involvement with WIZO (The Jewish womens' group) and being helped in to the Jewish community by Sheba Gordon. Description: Reminiscences of Boyden describing the pioneering community of Ruaroa, a settlement near Dannevirke, in which he lived for 58 years. He was given information on earlier times by senior members of his family and the story begins with an historical summary of the area's development. Subjects covered include his father's arrival arrival at Ruaroa and his development of land won in a ballot, bringing bush into pasture, hunting, transport, the back country, school, pioneer women, local industry, roads, weather, Hunter's Mill, Nellie Evelyn White, Graham's Mill, the 1914-1918 war and livestock.
