Backgrounds appointment as Matron at Rotorua Hospital and mentions amalgamation of Rotorua and Queen Elizabeth Hospitals with reference to recruitment and retention. Mentions the Carpenter Report in the 1970s and the development of the Polytechnic programme for training nurses. Describes argument put forward by Rotorua for siting Polytechnic there. Description: Betty Leniston was born in 1926 in Island Bay. Relates her maternal Irish background, refers to emigrant ships and Irish songs. Explains how Aunty Frances Cunningham met her future husband, Will McGruddy, sheepfarmer of Eketahuna and describes their house, talks of their farm workers, cousins helping with shearing, the train set, Mercedes Benz cars. Mentions her mother's laughter, singing, social work, working as a buyer at a drapery store and at the St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen, buying a section of land. Describes her cooking techniques, her hospitalisation and death following childbirth. Relates that her brother was cared for by the Home of Compassion and explains how she and her siblings coped after mother's death. Recalls her stepmother and housekeepers, and being in an orphanage. Explains her father's background and surname, mentions the family sweet factory in Lyttelton, his job as a clerical worker at Army Headquarters, his long service medal, working for the Post Office. Recalls family picnics at Happy Valley and Wilton Bush. Describes soap making and the making of a clothes drying rack. Talks about her brother Joe, a favourite with grandmother, his poliomyelitis and Maori medicinal treatment, Scouts membership, his work as messenger boy with DIC department store, buying a new coat on hire purchase. Details registration conditions of first car, a Chevrolet, insurance of a Vauxhall J, a van with built in benches loaned by a friend, and later owning a small bus. Explains how they gathered camping equipment together. Describes help with the children and later with Johnny Leniston's father from Assumption Sisters and neighbours. Recalls memories of early life in hotel and describes clientele which included commercial travellers arriving on horse back or on boats. Describes family involvement in company of eight stores and recalls the Taheke store being the first store to close due to burglaries, fires etc. Lists other stores. Talks about school days and remembers school as a big happy family with no racial tensions. Mentions teachers, Miss Davine and Mr and Mrs Duckering. Recalls family attending St Luke's Church at Pakanae which opened in the 1920s and refers to Bishop Averill. Childhood fun included fishing, eeling in the bush, visits to sandhills across the harbour and picnics. Recalls visiting old house at Whanui belonging to Selwyn Watkins. Gives details of job with Dalgetys, describing wage patterns. Talks of parents' struggle to provide for children through hard times and their generosity to those in need. Describes family involvement during flu epidemic. Recalls marriage in 1948 and return to family firm, A S Andrewes in Kohukohu, moving to Opononi store in 1953 which he managed until retirement in 1982, when A S Andrewes & Sons Ltd ceased to exist as a trading company. Description: John Allan (Jack) James was born in Temuka in 1916. Spent most of his life in the Murchison area and most of his childhood and working years as a farmer in the Maruia area. Recalls his experience of the 1929 Murchison earthquake, which he describes in detail, its effects on his small community and the trek from his family home, which had to be abandoned, to Murchison and beyond. Talks about the effect on the Maruia River and alteration of the landscape. Refers to Gibson's slip. Mentions Infantile Paralysis Epidemic, ca 1924. Also offers insights into farming life in a remote area of Nelson during the 1930s Depression and into the social and community life of the Murchison area.
