Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working. Description: Frederick George Gimblett, known as Ted, was born in Northcote, Auckland in 1929. Talks about how his family moved to Otaki in 1939, where his father, bought the general store within days of the start of World War II. Mentions his father being rejected for enlisting in the war. Describes in detail the store, and products sold. Talks about a fire that gutted the store in 1942 and getting a government permit to restore it. Talks about the store's conversion to a Four Square shop, which his brother Jack took over in 1968. Talks about taking over his father's hardware store the same year. Talks about his father's involvement in the community, including the Otaki Council, president of the Grocers Association, golf, Masonic Lodge, school committees, and his love of English cars. Describes how his father looked after key townspeople, such as the bank manager, police and stationmaster. Refers to the bank manager as the 'lord of the manor'. Talks about class structures in the town, and to Maori being called 'Natives', and only being allowed to play golf on Wednesday afternoon. Description: Sales catalogue for the company which merged in 1918 with the Farmers' Union Trading Company, to become the Farmers' Trading Company. Inside front cover shows a calendar for the last part of 1915, and January-September 1916. There is a foreword by company founder Robert Laidlaw, photographs of the Auckland sales staff, photographs of the showrooms of each department and portraits of the staff who ran them; photographs of office staff at work and the shop equipment (entrance stairs, elevator, employees dining room, currant cleaner and raisin stemmer, the packing department), and an illustration of the warehouse on the corner of Hobson and Wyndham Streets. There follows an advertisement for the company's book of plans and specifications for houses, and an account of the way the war was affecting prices and supplies of goods (See pages 18-21).
