Bennett, Beverley Shore, 1928- :[Initial design for the Holm Window] 1969

Date: 1969

By: Shore Bennett, Beverley Doris, 1928-

Reference: A-444-035

Description: Shows the artist's first design for what became the Holm Window in the Cathedral of St Paul, Wellington. At the top of the window, St Paul, the patron of the cathedral, stands legs and arms wide, holding a sword. The patterns and colours of the glass around him suggest the swirling of sea waves. Top left, the window shows the stars of the Southern Cross and the flag of the Holm Shipping Company. Three ships represent stages in the development of the company. They are, lower right, the barque Malay, the company's first sailing ship. Above it is the Holmdale, the last ship, and on the left, the John, the first motorised vessel. The Holm window, a major contribution to the Cathedral's stained glass is dedicated to the memory of Captain Ferdinand Holm, founder of the Holm Shipping Company, and his wife Mary Alexander who were married in Old St Paul's Church in 1870. The window was dedicated by Bishop Henry Baines, seventh Bishop of Wellington, in 1970, and was Beverley Shore Bennett's first stained-glass design. It was made in collaboration with Roy Miller of Miller Studios, Dunedin. Inscriptions: Verso - centre - Very first concept of Holm Window 1969. Later developed and modified. B.S.B. Quantity: 1 photocopy/ies. Physical Description: Colour photocopy on A3 paper Provenance: Donation: Beverley Shore Bennett, Waikanae, 25 July 2011
