Belanger-Taylor, Stephen, 1940-2009

Taylor, Stephen, 1940-2009

Born in South East London. Aged 15 he won a scholarship to the Wimbledon School of Art where he was introduced to stained glass and learned the techniques of restoring stained glass windows. He then won a scholarship to the School of Stained Glass at the Royal College of Art, London. His studies took him to Paris and other parts of France where he learned the historic glass techniques of the early Flemish glass makers in order to replicate 12th and 14th century glass and pigments. When he had finished his studies he taught at the Royal College of Art. He moved to Canada in 1968 when he recieved a commission from St James Cathedral, Toronto. While in Canada he taught, made stained glass windows, and met his wife, Denise Belanger. Stephen and Denise first visited New Zealand in 1985, but after fifteen months returned to Canada. Then in 1990 Stephen began working with New Zealand stained glass designer, Beverley Shore Bennett, as her interpretive artist, shipping completed work from Canada to New Zealand. By 1995 he had so much work in New Zealand that he and his wife returned and set up a stained glass workshop near Geraldine.
