Days Bay House

In Days Bay, Eastbourne, Wellington Region. Built by James H Williams as part of the attractions he was developing after he purchased Days Bay from the Todd family in 1894. Opened in 1903, to provide accommodation for fifty guests and their servants. Designed to further attract visitors to his development, which included the Days Bay Pavillion (built 1897), bathing sheds, a fairground, walking tracks and various sports fields. The House was not very sucessful as a hotel, as most visitors to Days Bay were daytrippers, and not enough people wanted to stay. It was sold in 1913 to Gladys Somerville who transformed it into the Croydon Preparatory School for Boys (1914-1940), after which it became Wellesley College. See "Eastbourne ; a history of the eastern bays of Wellington Harbour" by Ann Beaglehole with Alison Carew.
