Description: Interview with Jenny McLeod, born in Wellington in 1941. Outlines her family background including her mother's musical family. Comments on the impact of Methodism on her childhood. Refers to being able to read music from kindergarten age, learning to play the piano, and meeting William Southgate as a child. Mentions playing in bands for dances and weddings when she was a teenager in Levin. Recalls spending a year in the United States when she was 16 and then attending the Cambridge Summer Music School for the first time. Talks about the composers class and writing pieces for the Summer School Orchestra. Discusses her time as a student in the Music Department of Victoria University. Tells of the influence of Frederick (Fred) Page, becoming friends with Fred and Eve Page, and being introduced to a new social world. Recalls teachers David Farquhar, Margaret Neilsen and Douglas Lilburn, and fellow students Paul Katene, Roy Murphy, John Charles and Ian Mcdonald. Refers to setting up the Music Society at the university for the performance of contemporary music. Talks about studying in Paris after she graduated. Recalls studying with Boulez, Messiaen and Stockhausen, their personalities and their lifelong influence on her. Describes pieces she composed in Europe as part of her studies. Talks about starting teaching at Victoria University when she returned from Europe and becoming professor of music when Fred Page retired in 1971. Talks about becoming interested in tone-clock theory and her work with Peter Schat until they fell out. Speaks of the burden of being a senior composer. Tells of her developing interest and involvement with Maori over the years, and her particular relationship with Whanganui iwi. Recalls her crisis of faith and how she overcame crises. Refers to her involvement with the Divine Light Mission, writing music for them, and living in ashrams for some years. Comments that she feels she does things in phases of eight or nine years and then moves on to the next thing. Describes returning to Christianity late in life but not feeling a need to attend church regularly. Comments that she now feels that her spirituality is her music.
