Description: Recto shows arrangement of text above and below a half-length portrait of this bare-chested wrestler and boxer. The verso is in Maori (Ko Kiriki Hori). The "Otago witness", 6 July 1899, page 36 reports: "" Greek George," a champion wrestler and weight-lifter, is at present in Dunedin. He will probably give an exhibition of his great strength shortly. He has a standing challenge to the world for wrestling in Graeco-Roman, catch-as-catch-can, collar and elbow, side haul, and Cornish wrestling. " Greek George " has travelled nearly all over the World. He has credentials to show that he fought in the recent war between Turkey and Greece". Description: John Da Silva who was born at Great Barrier Island outlines family background - Da Silva family bought land at Mangati Bay, Great Barrier Island in 1881 - grandfather worked for Sir George Grey on Kauwau Island. Explains how Sir George helped match-make grandmother, then working at Kaikoura Island, Fitzroy Harbour. Grandfather born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and as a sea whaler he jumped ship at Auckland. Explains that for some time family became Silva - John returned to original name of Da Silva. Recalls father and brother, Paul, going to World War I - both survived Gallipoli but injured. Afer war, settled at Papakura. John's mother was an English war-bride who came to New Zealand from London - describes conditions. John recalls wrestling days when he represented New Zealand at the Empire Games and later became professional wrestler, travelling the world for 10-12 years, and on retirement from wrestling offered services to Maori Affairs working with young people. Describes Community Trust set up when Maori Affairs dissolved, and the continued work with young people, getting them out of homes and showing them the freedom of the outdoors.
