Interview with Danna Glendining

Date: 29 Jun 2007

From: National Advisory Council on the Employment of Women - NACEW oral history project

By: Glendining, Danna Mary, 1944-

Reference: OHInt-0865-01

Description: Interview with Danna Glendining, born Palmerston North in 1944. Talks about her family background and rural childhood. Comments that her parents thought girls should be well educated, but that women's careers were for before having a family. Refers to her mother's contemporaries being busy farmers' wives, but that rural wives took outside employment during the 1980s. Briefly discusses her marriage and children. Outlines how her activism began with starting a preschool in the isolated area where she lived in the Wairarapa and then campaigning for a school bus. Talks about the impact of attending the United Women's Convention in Wellington in 1975, then organising a similar convention in the Wairarapa and setting up a WEL (Women's Electoral Lobby) branch there. Describes how this led to the formation of TREC (Towards Rural Equality of Citizenship). Comments on becoming active in Wairarapa Federated Farmers, meeting Ruth Richardson who later nominated by her for a position on NACEW (National Advisory Council for the Employment of Women). Discusses the people on NACEW, how it operated as a government-funded advisory group under the umbrella of the Department of Labour, and the slow pace of change. Refers to coming into contact with strong women and feminists through NACEW and how some of them felt NACEW was not vocal enough. Comments that a lot of NACEW issues were irrelevant to rural women and she worked with their issues through the TREC network and WAG. Mentions the campaign for equal pay for equal work and women who have worked on the issue. Discusses her activities post NACEW, including working as a regional women's advisor for the Department of Social Welfare and then for the State Services Commission's Equal Employment Opportunities Unit. Comments that there is still a need for NACEW because of continuing subtle discrimination. Refers to parental leave and Kiwi Saver. Mentions that she believes that parental care is important for young children.
