Dame Silvia Cartwright graduated LLB, University of Otago. After several years of private legal practice in Hamilton and specialising in family law was appointed District and Family Court Judge. Later became Chief District Court Judge and then the first woman appinted Judge of the High Court. Awarded DBE in 1989. Conducted the Inquiry into the Treatment of Cervical Cancer at National Women's Hospital in 1988. Daughter of Monteith Poulter, 1910-1993 and Eileen Jane Poulter (née Joss), 1911-2004. Married to Peter John Cartwright (b 1940).
