Composer and lecturer at the Conservatorium of Music, Sydney, for 15 years from 1981, becoming head of composition. Subsequently worked as a self-employed composer with occasional work from British publishers. Interviewed in 1986 and 2008. Daughter of Ivan Whitehead (1905-1983) and Marjorie Emma Whitehead (née Roberts, 1909-1991). Description: Interview with Gillian Whitehead, born in Hamilton in 1941. Comments that both of her parents were musicians. Talks about growing up in Whangarei after the War, her father importing sheet music and teaching singing and violin, and there being much music in the home. Mentions learning piano from Hannah Stratford and Don Bowick and violin from Aage Nielsen. Recalls starting composing fairly early, often choral works. Refers to attending concerts from an early age. Mentions the first piece of New Zealand music she heard was by Dorothea Franci. Recalls very active music teachers at Whangarei Girls' High School, particularly Eileen Reed. Talks about starting a general arts degree at Auckland University but switching to music in her second year and studying with Ronald Tremain. Mentions singing in the Cathedral Choir in Auckland under Peter Godfrey. Refers to attending Cambridge Summer Music Schools as a choir member not as a composer. Recalls the struggle to get composition taken seriously in the Auckland University music department and switching to Victoria University. Refers to teachers David Farquhar and Douglas Lilburn, and fellow student Jenny McLeod. Discusses studying for a masters degree at the University of Sydney with Peter Sculthorpe.
