Description: The recollections contain an account of Oldham's experiences as a farmer, flax manufacturer and lay preacher. Includes an editorial note by the donor who retyped the recollections from an earlier typescript. Oldham was born and grew up in Nottingham. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1859 and initially farmed at Mangawai, Maungatroto and Paparoa in Northland. A Methodist lay preacher, he conducted services in this district before an official Methodist circuit was established. He became involved in the manufacture of flax matting and in ca 1880 moved to Tuakau in Waikato where he ran a flax factory for about 18 years before retiring to Auckland.
